Death Toll Rises To 23 In Feni Floods || Photo : Collected
The death toll in the recent flash floods in Feni has risen to 23, according to district administration sources as of Friday night. Of the deceased, 17 were men and 6 are women. 16 of the recovered bodies have been identified, but 7 have not yet been.
The floods, caused by the upwelling of water from India and heavy rains, have submerged six upazilas, leaving hundreds of thousands of people stranded. As the flood situation improves, dead bodies are now being found floating in canals, beels and other places.
Superintendent of Police of Feni Mohammad Monirul Islam confirmed the matter.
Of the total deceased, 7 died in Fulgazi upazila, 6 in Sonagazi upazila, 3 each in Feni Sadar and Chhagalnaiya upazilas, and 2 each in Daganbhuiyan and Parshuram upazilas.
The first fatality was reported on the night of August 24, when locals discovered a body floating in knee-deep water in front of Sonali Bank on Mizan Road in Feni.
The following day, the body of a child was found in the floodwaters in North Gobindpur village of the Lalpol area in Feni Sadar upazila.
According to locals, many people are still missing due to the floods. Relatives and neighbours believe that the bodies of many of them may be found in various locations.
Monirul Islam, said that the water has not completely receded in the villages of Feni. The full death toll will be known once the water recedes completely.
