A Bangladeshi teenage girl was killed by gunfire from the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) along Kulaura border in Moulvibazar district on Sunday night.

The incident happened around 9:00 PM in the Lalarchak border area under Sharifpur union in the upazila.

The deceased was identified as Swarna Das, 16, daughter of  Parendra Das, a resident of Kalnigar village under Juri upazila in the district.

It is reported that the BSF took the body away.

Swarna's father said that Swarna and her mother tried to cross the border illegally with the help of local brokers to visit his brother, who has been living in Tripura for a long time. When they reached the barbed-wire fence near the Indian border at around 9 P.M, the BSF opened fire on them, leaving Swarna dead on the spot but her mother remained safe.

On Monday night, a team from the Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) 46 Battalion visited Swarna’s home, and informed her family of the news.

Nayek Obaid, the patrol commander of Lalarchak BOP of BGB 46-Battalion, said that one was killed by BSF gunfire when several Bangladeshis had attempted to enter India illegally.

However, the Indian authorities have not yet handed over the body of the deceased teenager.

Binoy Bhuson Roy, officer-in-charge of Kulaura Police Station, said that no one had informed the matter yet, but efforts are ongoing to ascertain the fact.
