The five-member Election Commission, led by Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Kazi Habibul Awal, has resigned. CEC Awal announced their collective resignation during a press conference on Thursday (September 5) afternoon.
The other members, including Election Commissioners Brigadier General (Retd.) Md. Ahsan Habib Khan, Begum Rashida Sultana, Md Alamgir, and Md Anisur Rahman, also stepped down.
There has been significant scrutiny both domestically and internationally over the conduct of the 10th, 11th, and 12th parliamentary elections under the Awami League government led by Sheikh Hasina.
Appointed on February 27, 2022, the Kazi Habibul Awal-led commission was intended to serve a five-year term, but they resigned before completing their tenure.
