A Dhaka court has sent former inspector general of police (IGP) AKM Shahidul Hoque to jail in a case filed for allegedly killing trader Abdul Wadud during quota reform protests in Dhaka’s New Market area on July 19.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Ali Haider passed the order after the investigation officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Bayezid Bostami of the New Market police station, produced Shahidul before the court on Wednesday morning following the completion of his seven-day remand. 

Earlier on September 3, the Detective Branch of Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested him. 

On September 4, police produced him before Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court of Dhaka with a 10-day remand prayer in the case. The court subsequently granted a seven-day remand.

On July 19, trader Abdul Wadud was killed in a shooting incident in front of gate 1 of New Market.

On August 21, a case was filed against 130 people including former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Road, Transport and Bridges Minister Obaidul Quader and former IGP Shahidul Hoque. 

Former Law Minister Anisul Hoque, former Home Minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal, adviser to former Prime Minister Salman F Rahman, former Foreign Minister Hasan Mahmud, former Education Minister Mohibul Hasan Chowdhury Nowfel and former Jute Minister Jahangir Kabir Nanak were also accused in the case.
