The US Embassy in Dhaka stated today that the private sector in the United States could help unlock Bangladesh's growth potential through trade and investment, provided the right economic reforms are implemented.

The Embassy highlighted that US businesses positively impact various aspects of Bangladesh’s economy, including energy security, data centers, and transportation, following a trade and investment discussion in the capital.

The meeting was attended by US Assistant Secretary for International Finance Brent Neiman, Director Jerrod Mason, Chargé d'affaires (ad interim) Helen LaFave, Political/Economic Counselor Eric Geelan, and USAID Mission Director Reed Aeschliman.

Representatives from the American Chamber of Commerce in Bangladesh (AmCham), including President Syed Ershad Ahmed, Vice-President Eric M Walker, MetLife in Bangladesh CEO Ala Uddin Ahmad, Mastercard Country Manager Syed Mohammad Kamal, and GE Country Manager Nowshad Ali, were also present.

Earlier that morning, Brent Neiman arrived in Dhaka to lead a US delegation focused on bilateral relations and was welcomed at Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport by the foreign ministry’s Director General (North America) Khandker Masudul Alam.

Dhaka has prepared for an extensive and multi-faceted discussion, marking the visit of the first high-level US delegation since the formation of the interim government led by Chief Adviser Professor Muhammad Yunus.

US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asian Affairs Donald Lu joined the delegation later in the day after concluding his tour in India.

The US delegation is set to meet with Chief Adviser Prof Yunus, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, and Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed, among other officials. Foreign Secretary Md Jashim Uddin will also host a working lunch with representatives from relevant ministries.

The discussions are expected to cover a broad range of topics beyond a single issue, focusing on how the US can support Bangladesh's economic growth, financial stability, and development goals. Assistant Secretary Lu will also reaffirm the US commitment to promoting economic growth and stability across the Indo-Pacific region.
