Former Member of Parliament (MP) for Bhola-4 (Char Fasson-Monpura) Abdullah Al-Jakob was arrested by the Detective Branch of the police in Lalbagh, the capital city.

The arrest was confirmed on Tuesday, October 1, by Abdullah Al-Mamun, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Detective Branch of the Lalbagh zone.

According to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), former MP Abdullah Al-Jakob was detained by the Detective Branch in connection with a case filed with Savar Police Station.

In 2012, a case was filed against former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and MP Abdullah Al-Jakob for allegedly attempting to kill opposition leaders and activists by opening fire on a BNP-led rally. The case was filed by former MP of Bhola-4 Nazim Uddin on Thursday, September 12, in the court of Dhaka Judicial Magistrate SM Saiful Islam.

The accused in the case include former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, former Home Minister Mohiuddin Khan Alamgir, former MP of Bhola-4 Abdullah Al-Islam Jakob, former IGP Hasan Mahmud Khandaker, former DIG of Dhaka Range SM Mahfuzul Haque Nuruzzaman, former Superintendent of Police Habibur Rahman, and then Officer-in-Charge of Savar Model Police Station Asaduzzaman.

The case alleges that on December 9, 2012, during a peaceful democratic sit-in protest called by the BNP-led 18-party alliance at Amin Bazar Bridge, police attacked the leaders and activists with batons and opened fire. As a result of the police firing of tear gas shells and shotgun rounds, Nazim Uddin Alam and over 50 activists were injured by gunfire.
