Nahid Islam, one of the key coordinators of Bangladesh's anti-discrimination student movement, has been included in TIME magazine's 2024 "TIME 100" list. This prestigious list highlights the 100 most influential people globally, published annually by TIME magazine.
TIME wrote about Nahid: "At just 26, Nahid Islam didn’t need more years to bring down one of the most powerful figures in the world. This sociology graduate became one of the prominent faces of the nationwide student movement against Bangladesh’s Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina."
The magazine added, "Among several protest leaders, he gained widespread recognition after being persecuted by the country’s intelligence agencies. Soon after, he delivered the students’ single demand: Hasina must resign."
TIME also remarked, "After 15 years of authoritarian rule, Bangladesh's democratic system has collapsed, posing a new challenge for the next government to restore it." On this, Nahid commented, "We need to understand the pulse of our new generation. The cycle of violence between political parties in Bangladesh must come to an end. We must move forward."
Notably, Nahid is one of two "Gen Z" advisors in Nobel laureate Dr. Muhammad Yunus' interim government. The other is Asif Mahmud Sajib Bhuiyan.
