23 New Judges Appointed To HC

President Md. Shahabuddin has appointed 23 new additional judges to the High Court Division.

On Tuesday, October 8, a notification was issued by the Ministry of Law, appointing these judges on the order of the President.

According to the notification, under the authority granted by Article 98 of the Constitution, the following 23 individuals, listed from (a) to (w), have been appointed as additional judges of the High Court Division of the Supreme Court of Bangladesh for a term not exceeding two years from the date of their oath-taking.

The appointed judges are: Md. Golam Mortuza Mazumder, Syed Enayet Hossain, Md. Mansur Alam, Syed Zahed Mansur, KM Rasheduzzaman Raja, Md. Javid Hossain, Mubina Asaf, Kazi Waliul Islam, Ainun Nahar Siddika, Md. Abdul Mannan, Tamanna Rahman, Md. Shafiul Alam Mahmud, Md. Hamidur Rahman, Nasreen Akhter, Sathika Hossain, Syed Mohammad Tajrul Hossain, Md. Toufiq Inam, Yusuf Abdullah Suman, Sheikh Tahsin Ali, Faiz Ahmed, Md. Sagir Hossain, Shikdar Mahmudur Raji, and Debashish Roy Chowdhury.

It has been reported that today, Wednesday, October 9, at 11:00 AM, the newly appointed 23 judges will be sworn in by Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed in the Judges’ Lounge of the Supreme Court. This is the largest appointment of judges in the Supreme Court following the fall of the Awami League government during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

According to Article 95(1) of the Constitution, the Chief Justice is appointed by the President, and other judges are appointed by the President in consultation with the Chief Justice.

While the qualification for appointing judges in the Supreme Court remains somewhat unclear, the criteria for disqualification are explicitly defined. According to the Constitution, a judge can hold office until the age of 67.

The Constitution stipulates that a person is ineligible for appointment as a judge if they are not a citizen of Bangladesh, have not practiced as an advocate in the Supreme Court for at least 10 years, have not held a judicial position within Bangladesh for at least 10 years, or do not meet the qualifications prescribed by law for the appointment of a judge in the Supreme Court.

In line with Article 98 of the Constitution, this appointment has been made for a period of two years.
