Police have detained two people in connection with the performance of an Islamic song at a Durga Puja mandap in Chattogram.
Chattogram Metropolitan Police Additional Deputy Commissioner (Media) Kazi Mohammad Tarek Aziz confirmed the matter on Friday morning (October 11).
A press briefing will be held at 11:30am on Friday to provide further details, the police announced.
Kazi Md Tarek Aziz, CMP's additional deputy commissioner (Public Relations) said: "Two person has been detained in connection with the incident at the JM Sen Hall Puja Mandap under Kotwali police station in the city.”
Earlier, at around 7:30pm on Thursday, a video went viral on social media showing members of the Chittagong Cultural Academy performing Islamic songs at the JM Sen Hall under the pretense of patriotic songs. The incident sparked widespread criticism.
Upon receiving the news, Chittagong Deputy Commissioner Farida Khanom, CMP Commissioner Hasib Aziz, and officials from the army and other administrative bodies visited the scene. They immediately discussed the situation and urged everyone to remain calm to bring the situation under control. They assured that those involved would be arrested.
The organization went to perform at the puka mandap at the invitation of Puja Udjapan Parishad's Joint Secretary, Sajal Dutta. However, after the performance, the Hindu community had mixed reactions, claiming the organization is associated with Jamaat-e-Islami.
However, Jamaat and Shibir said that the group is not affiliated with them.
