Ex-DNCC Mayor Atiqul Islam Detained

Dhaka North City Corporation’s former mayor Atiqul Islam was arrested from the capital’s Mohakhali DOHS area on Wednesday.

A team of detectives of Dhaka Metropolitan Police has confirmed the arrest to reporters. Atiqul has been detained over suspicions of having knowledge of, and potentially a role in the Awami League-government backed killing spree of civilian protesters during July-August.

Like most other Awami League leaders and activists, Atiqul went into hiding following the fall of the autocratic Awami League regime on 5 August.
