UNHR Commissioner Volker Turk To Visit Dhaka On Oct 29

UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Turk is set to visit Dhaka for three days. He is expected to arrive in Dhaka on October 29. During this visit, discussions will focus on the latest status of the UN investigative team's findings as well as the potential opening of a UN Human Rights Commissioner’s office in Bangladesh.

According to a credible source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, this information was confirmed on Saturday, October 19. The office of the UN High Commissioner has already begun coordinating with the Bangladesh government regarding Turk's visit. If all goes well, Turk will be in Dhaka from October 29 to 31.

A diplomatic source in Dhaka has stated that the dates for Turk's visit have been finalized, with his arrival scheduled for October 29. During his visit, Turk may inquire about the UN investigative team's findings regarding how the previous government attempted to suppress student-led movements.

Additionally, discussions about the establishment of the UN Human Rights Commissioner's office in Bangladesh are also expected during Turk's visit. Both parties have expressed preliminary agreement on this matter, and detailed discussions are likely to take place during his visit.

It is known that during his time in Dhaka, the UN High Commissioner will pay a courtesy call on the Chief Advisor of the interim government, Dr. Muhammad Yunus. He is also scheduled to meet with Foreign Affairs Advisor Mohammad Tohid Hossain and several other advisors from the interim government. Moreover, he is expected to hold meetings with senior government officials and representatives from civil society.

A source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs revealed that Turk's visit was initially planned for the second week of September, but it was postponed due to scheduling conflicts between both parties.

Notably, in September, during the UN General Assembly in New York, the UN High Commissioner met with Dr. Muhammad Yunus for a courtesy visit.
