A Dhaka court sent Kaushik Hossain Taposh, CEO and musician of Gaan Bangla, the country’s only music-focused television channel, to jail in an attempted murder case filed over an alleged attack on businessman Ishtiaque Mahmud during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Saifuzzaman issued the order on Monday (November 4) after police produced Taposh before the court with a seven-day remand prayer in the case.
The court sent Taposh to jail and set Wednesday (November 6) for the remand hearing, as the case’s investigating officer was not present during Monday’s proceedings.
Earlier, law enforcers arrested him from Gulshan area of the capital.
According to the case documents, on July 18, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, businessman Ishtiaque Mahmud and others participated in a demonstration. Supporters of the Awami League, Jubo League, and Chhatra League reportedly attacked and fired shots near Nawab Habibullah High School in Sector 4 of Uttara East.
Ishtiaque sustained a bullet wound in his abdomen and received treatment at Evercare Hospital.
On September 29, Ishtiaque filed a case with Uttara East police station against 126 individuals, including former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al Mamun.
Earlier, on August 5, Gaan Bangla’s studio located on Pragati Sarani in Dhaka was vandalized.
