The newly elected Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) AMM Nasir Uddin has said that everything will be done for holding free, fair and acceptable elections.

He said, “As the responsibility has been given, we have to fulfill it properly. This requires everyone's cooperation”.

Nasir Uddin came up with the statements while talking to reporters in an immediate reaction after being appointed as CEC on Thursday.

Responding to a query on the participation of Awami League in the next polls, he said, “There is a debate on whether to take the Awami League to the polls. Nothing can be said in this regard in advance. Everyone will see when the time comes.”

When asked how long it would take for the election, the new CEC said, “There are some preparations for the election. Many boys and girls have turned to 18. They should be included in the voter list. Again, it will not be enough to list voters only for national elections. There will be upazila election, union parishad election, separate lists will be made for that. It is a big challenge.”

He also said that he would perform his duties honestly and impartially.

“The new Election Commission under my leadership will make every effort to deliver fair, free and impartial elections. I think they can do it,” he continued.

Following the recommendation of the six-member search committee, the Election Commission (EC) has been formed comprising the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) and four commissioners.

The interim government has made retired secretary AMM Nasir Uddin as the new Chief Election Commissioner.

Newly appointed election commissioners are - former additional secretary Md Anwarul Islam Sarkar, retired district and sessions judge Abdur Rahmanel Masud, retied joint secretary Begum Tahmida Ahmad and Brigadier General (Retd) Abul Fazal Md Sanaullah.

President Mohammed Shahabuddin made the appointments under his constitutional authority. The Cabinet Division issued separate gazette notifications on Thursday to this end.

The gazette notifications will come into immediate effect.

The government formed the search committee led by Appellate Division Justice Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury on October 29 in accordance with the Clause-3 of “The Chief Election Commissioner and Other Election Commissioners Appointment Act, 2022”.

The search committee recommended the names of qualified individuals for the positions of the CEC and other commissioners.
