Reuters Didn’t Talk To Police Officer: CMP || Photo : Collected
Chattogram Metropolitan Police has slammed a Reuters report on the killing of a lawyer in clashes over the arrest of Sanatan Jagaran Mancha leader Chinmoy Krishna Das.
“Nobody from Reuters contacted Deputy Police Commissioner Liaquat Ali Khan. We have four constables named Liaquat and none of them spoke to the media. Reuters attributed the fabricated statement to an officer,” CMP said in a statement on Wednesday (November 27).
Prosecution lawyer Saiful Islam was murdered during a clash between Chinmoy’s supporters and police in Chattogram on Tuesday (November 26). Reuters news agency ran a report on the development, titled ‘One Killed in Bangladesh as Hindu protesters clash with police’.
It claimed that "a Muslim lawyer defending Das" was killed amid protests outside the court and attributed the information to police officer Liaquat.
Liaquat was deployed in the court premises and was trying to restore law and order during the incident.
Reuters later corrected the report and removed the words “defending Das” and attributed the information to police.
Chinmoy Das faces sedition charges filed in October after leading a large rally in Chattogram, in which he was accused of disrespecting Bangladesh’s national flag. A Chattogram court rejected his bail plea and sent him to jail.
