To ensure the rule of law in the country, Chief Justice Syed Refaat Ahmed has emphasized the need to separate the judiciary from the executive branch.
He stated that a Supreme Judicial Council has been formed for the removal of judges, a process that was previously under the parliament’s authority. The government has been formally proposed to separate the judiciary.
The Chief Justice made these comments on Saturday, November 30, while participating in a workshop for newly appointed lawyers.
He urged the new lawyers to work with integrity, highlighting that institutional autonomy is an inseparable part of judicial independence. He called on them to actively protect the dignity of the judiciary.
At the beginning of the workshop, a one-minute silence was observed in honor of lawyer Saiful Islam Alif, who was killed at the court premises in Chattogram. A special prayer was also held for the victims and injured during the August 5 protests.
The event was attended by Senior Justice of the Appellate Division Zubayer Rahman Chowdhury, High Court Justice Farah Mahbub, Attorney General Md. Asaduzzaman, President of the Supreme Court Bar Mahbub Uddin Khokon, and President of the Nationalist Lawyers’ Forum Advocate Zainul Abedin.
