Not Sure About Interpol’s ‘Red Notice For Hasina’: Chief Prosecutor || Photo : Collected
International Crimes Tribunal’s Chief Prosecutor Tajul Islam has said that it is not sure whether Interpol has issued a red notice for deposed Bangladeshi prime minister Sheikh Hasina.
“The National Central Bureaus (NCBs) branch of the police will know if the notice is issued,” he said on Sunday (December 22).
Earlier, it was reported that Interpol issued a red notice for Sheikh Hasina.
Hasina is accused in a number of cases filed over the July-August genocide.
An Interpol Red Notice is the closest instrument to an international arrest warrant in use today. Interpol circulates notices to member countries listing persons who are wanted for extradition.
What started as a protest against the discriminatory public sector job quotas turned into a mass movement that toppled Hasina’s government on August 5. Hasina imposed an indefinite curfew, shut down internet and called out the army and paramilitary BGB to quell the protests.
The Mass Uprising Special Cell (MUSC) released the names of 858 martyrs and 11,551 injured in its first draft list on Saturday (December 21).
Hasina fled to India and has been taking part in various political programmes from there. Her presence in India and criticism of the interim government have dampened the once warm bilateral ties.
Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on December 11 told the Parliamentary Standing Committee on External Affairs that India does not endorse deposed prime minister Hasina’s criticism of the interim government.
Bangladesh says it will seek her extradition but Delhi will likely decline the request.
