A local court placed Akash Mandal Irfan on 7-day remand for killing seven people onboard fertiliser-laden vessel in the Meghna River out of anger after being deprived of wages for long and misconduct with him by the vessel’s master Golam Kibira.
Chandpur Judicial Magistrate court judge Muhammad Farhan Sadiq placed him on 7-day remand on Wednesday (December 25) evening. Earlier, the investigating officer of the case, Chandpur Naval Police Inspector Md. Kalam Kha produced him with a 10-day remand plea.
The matter was confirmed by the state's lawyer and the court's APP Advocate Sharif Mahmud Sayem.
Earlier, RAB arrested Irfan from Chitalmari, Bagerhat, who was involved in the seven murders on the MV Al Bakhera ship in Majhirchar area of Haimchar, Chandpur this morning. He is the son of Jagodish Mandol of Bagerhat’s Fakirhat upazila, used to work as a helping hand of the vessel’s staff.
According to the case source, there were not 8 people on the ship, but 9. And that person is Akash Mandal Irfan. The injured Sukani Jewel wrote this information as she could not speak. The ship's owner, Mahabub Murshed, filed a case in this incident. An unidentified group of robbers has been named the accused in the case.
The plaintiff mentioned the names of the injured and murdered people in the case statement. The victims of the murder are Master Golam Kibria, Greaser Md. Shojibul Islam, Laskar Md. Majedul Islam, Sheikh Sabuj, Salauddin, Aminur Munshi and cook Rana Kazi. In addition, Sukani Md. Jewel was injured.
Mahbub Murshed, the plaintiff in the case, mentioned in his statement that Jewel could not speak because her throat was slit. He could not describe the incident. He indicated that he would recognize the robbers if he recovered. However, he wrote that there was another person named Irfan with Jewel. However, he could not give his address. After the incident, police recovered a hand glove, two empty packets of sleeping pills, seven mobile phones of the deceased, and blood-stained jeans pants from the procession of Akash Mondal alias Ifran.
Naval Police said that the injured Jewel is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital with security.
Chandpur Deputy Commissioner Md. Mohsin Uddin said that the bodies were handed over to the families. The district administration has given Tk 20,000 to each family of the deceased and Tk 10,000 to each family by the naval police.
