588 Bangladeshis Killed By BSF In 15 Years: Report || Photo : Collected
In the last 15 years, 1,361 Bangladeshi casualties have occurred on the India-Bangladesh border. During this period, the Border Security Force (BSF) of the neighboring country has killed 588 Bangladeshis and injured 773 others.
This information was given in a list published by the human rights organization 'Adhikar' on Monday (January 6).
According to the list, the BSF has been carrying out these killings on the border regularly since 2009. That year, the BSF killed 98 Bangladeshis on the border. 77 others were injured during this time. In 2010, 74 people were killed and 72 were injured.
The number of deaths decreased slightly in 2011. That year, the BSF killed 31 Bangladeshis. During this time, 62 people were injured by the BSF.
In 2012, 38 people were killed and 100 were injured by the BSF. In 2013, 29 people were killed and 79 injured. In 2014, 35 people were killed and 68 injured.
A list published by ‘Odhikar’ further states that in 2015, 44 Bangladeshis were killed and 60 injured by the BSF. The following year, 29 were killed and 36 injured.
In 2017, the border guards of the neighboring country killed 25 Bangladeshi citizens, while 39 were injured in their firing. The number of deaths decreased significantly in 2018. That year, 11 Bangladeshis were killed by the BSF. 24 Bangladeshis were injured.
The number of deaths by the BSF increased again in 2019. The Indian Border Guard killed almost three times as many Bangladeshis at the border as in 2018. That year, 41 people were killed and 40 were injured.
This number increased further in 2020. That year, 51 Bangladeshis were killed and 27 were injured in BSF firing. In 2021, 17 citizens of this country were killed and 12 were injured at the border. In 2022, the number of deaths was 18 and the number of injuries was 21, in 2023, the number of deaths was 28 and the number of injuries was 28.
Till November 2024, 19 Bangladeshis were killed and 28 were injured by the Indian Border Security Force.
The information published by Odhikar has surprised the people of Bangladesh. Such indiscriminate killings on the border of two neighboring countries can happen year after year, except in a state of war, this is rare in world history.
It is worth noting that India is our friendly and closest neighbor. But border killings have emerged as a wound between these two friendly countries. Bangladeshi people are losing their lives at the hands of the Indian Border Security Force (BSF) at regular intervals.
Although various promises have been made from the high levels of both countries to stop border killings at various times, they are not working.
Along with the general public, Bangladeshi border guards have also been victims of killings. Due to this, people on the border live in fear. Many cannot cultivate regularly in the areas adjacent to the border. The BSF beats them up and takes them away for a long time.
Bangladesh and India share an international land border of about 4,156 kilometers, the fifth longest in the world. In September 2022, the then Prime Minister of Bangladesh Sheikh Hasina and the Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi issued a joint statement to reduce border killings to zero. Despite this joint statement, killings on the border have not stopped.
