The father of child Ayaan, who died after a circumcision procedure at Badda’s United Medical College Hospital, has demanded exemplary punishment for the two doctors responsible and sought Tk 5 crore in damages.
Ayaan’s father Shamim Ahmed informed Somoy about the development on Wednesday (January 29).
Justice Farah Mahbub and Justice Debasish Roy Chowdhury’s High Court bench held a hearing based on the report of the second inquiry committee that investigated Ayaan’s death. The next hearing is scheduled for March 5.
“Ayaan died due to the use of excessive anaesthesia. The court recommended action against the doctors responsible and the hospital after reviewing the investigation report,” said Shamim’s lawyer ABM Shahjahan Akanda Masum.
Ayaan underwent circumcision under general anaesthesia at the United Medical College Hospital at Satarkul on December 30, 2023. His family alleged medical negligence as the cause of his death.
Following the operation, Ayaan failed to regain consciousness and was transferred to the United Hospital in Gulshan. He was on life support in the Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) for seven days before doctors pronounced his death on January 7 at midnight.
Shamim filed a case with the Badda police station.
The Directorate General of Health Service (DGHS) authorities submitted a report to the HC, which the court said was eyewash and ridiculous. The court then ordered forming a committee to re-investigate the death and file a report within a month.
“The particular hospital is operating without the approval of the health ministry, which is medical negligence,” said the HC.
Last November, the court ordered the investigators to submit the report by January 12 this year.
