A Dhaka court has placed seven individuals, including Salman F Rahman and former law minister Anisul Huq, on a two-day remand each in a case filed over the murder of auto-rickshaw driver Hafizul Shikdar in the Badda Thana area of the capital during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement.

The other accused are former justice AHM Shamsuddin Chowdhury Manik, former mayor Atiqul Islam, former state minister for posts, telecommunications and information technology Zunaid Ahmed Palak, former Social Welfare minister Dr Dipu Moni, and labour leader Golam Sarwar Pintu.

Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate G M Farhan Ishtiaq passed the order after a hearing on Monday (February 3).

CID Dhaka Metro North Inspector Riduanul Haque, also the investigating officer of the case, filed a petition for a five-day remand.

Earlier, the accused were brought to the court from Keraniganj prison.

The defense lawyers appealed for bail, seeking cancellation of the remand. On behalf of the prosecution, Public Prosecutor Omar Faruq Faruqi argued in favor of the remand. After the hearing, the judge granted a two-day remand each.

According to the case statements, during the Anti-Discrimination Student Movement, on July 20, an auto-rickshaw driver, Hafizul Shikdar, 29, was waiting for passengers in the Pragati Sarani area of Badda in the capital. At that time, in an attempt to suppress the movement, a bullet fired by the accused hit Hafizul’s left rib and exited through his right armpit. Following this incident, the case was filed at Badda police station on August 21.
