Moon in the sky with Eid message

With the sighting of the Shawwal moon, Bangladesh will celebrate Eid-ul-Fitr on Monday.

The National Moon Sighting Committee made the announcement on Sunday evening following a meeting at the Islamic Foundation. The confirmation of the moon sighting marked the end of Ramadan in 29 days and immediately set off preparations for Eid festivities in households across the country.

As the moon was spotted in the Middle East on Saturday, Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, and several other countries observed Eid on Sunday. In line with Saudi Arabia, around 50 villages in different districts of Bangladesh also celebrated Eid on Sunday.

Muslims worldwide observe Eid-ul-Fitr on the first day of Shawwal following a month of fasting in Ramadan.

The interim government extended the Eid holiday by one additional day, giving government employees a total of nine consecutive days off. The main Eid congregation will take place at the National Eidgah at 7:30 AM, where the President, Chief Justice, politicians, diplomats, and people from all walks of life will gather for prayers.

As in previous years, many city dwellers have left for their hometowns to celebrate Eid with their families. Unlike in past years, this year’s Eid travel was relatively smooth, with fewer disruptions and inconveniences.
