Middle East: Bangladesh Reminded of Its Support for Palestine

While many Muslim countries in the Middle East have recognized Israel, Bangladesh has reaffirmed its solidarity with the rights of the Palestinians and the two nation theory.

On Sunday, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Bangladesh issued a message in this regard on the International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian People. The message was signed by Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina.

The most important condition for resolving the long-running Israeli-Palestinian crisis is two separate countries for both sides.

Since independence in Bangladesh, it has been expressing solidarity with the rights of Palestinians and the bi-national theory.

But recently the context has changed a lot. Three Muslim countries in the Middle East have taken important steps to normalize relations with Israel.

Even a recent secret visit by Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to Saudi Arabia and a meeting with Prince Mohammed bin Salman have sparked much discussion.

Some believe that there is a process of normalization of relations between Israel and Saudi Arabia, which is being mediated by the United States.

Whatever is in the message

Sheikh Hasina and the President of Bangladesh Md. Abdul Hamid gave different messages on this day yesterday.

"We reiterate our position in favor of the formation of a Palestinian state based on the 1967 borders in the form of a biracial theory with East Jerusalem-al-Quds al-Sharif as its capital," she said.

Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh has a constitutional obligation to support the struggle of any nation in the world for independence as it has fought for independence.

"Inspired by Bangladesh's painful experience of the horrific genocide of 1971, Bangladesh is vocal against the way in which the Palestinian people have been subjected to injustice and oppression for decades."

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have reportedly held secret meetings.

Referring to the Rohingya issue in her message, Sheikh Hasina said Bangladesh, inspired by the same spirit, has given shelter to millions of Rohingyas fleeing violence in Myanmar.

He called for a lasting solution to the Rohingya issue.

He spoke in support of the US Alliance, but said that maintaining some independence was important for the Palestinian people.

He called the Israeli army "occupiers" and called for an immediate end to the destruction of Palestinian homes and the settlement of Israeli settlements in the occupied territories.

This message in that background

Bangladesh has been supporting the Palestinian people since independence.

For this reason, Bangladesh did not accept the recognition after independence in 1971.

But several Arab countries in the world have been leaning towards Israel in recent times.

The United Arab Emirates announced the signing of a peace agreement with Israel in August.

Bahrain has since announced that it will normalize relations with Israel.

Even Saudi Arabia seems to be moving towards normalizing relations with Israel.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman have held a secret meeting.

These Middle Eastern countries, especially Saudi Arabia, are a source of income for millions of migrant workers. Against such a backdrop, in contrast to the position of these Middle Eastern countries, Bangladesh's position on behalf of the Palestinians sends a clear message.
