The United States has imposed sanctions on Russia’s state-owned news outlet RT, accusing it of attempting to undermine American democracy.
On Friday, September 13, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken announced the sanctions during a press conference at the State Department. According to a report by the British media BBC on Saturday, September 14, Blinken stated that RT is part of a network of Russian-supported media outlets that have secretly tried to weaken democracy in the U.S. He also labeled RT as a "real arm of Russian intelligence agencies."
Blinken claimed that the Russian government has infiltrated RT, turning it into a unit linked with Russian intelligence and cyber operational capabilities.
Earlier, the U.S. had imposed sanctions on several top Russian journalists, including RT’s Editor-in-Chief Margarita Simonyan, for alleged interference in the 2024 presidential elections.
In response, RT has criticized Blinken’s comments as the latest conspiracy theory from the U.S. Meanwhile, Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova suggested that the U.S. should consider making sanctions on Russia a “new profession.”
