Price Hike: Green Chilies Reach 300 BDT/kg, Onions And Chicken Also Up

The price of green chilies continues to rise, now selling at 300 BDT per kilogram. Onions are facing a similar situation, with prices increasing by 10 BDT per kilogram. Additionally, the prices of potatoes and broiler chicken have also increased. However, the prices of chicken eggs and garlic have decreased. Most vegetables and fish prices remain unchanged.

Wholesale and retail traders in the capital have reported that due to the Eid holidays, many people have gone to their hometowns, resulting in a reduced supply of daily necessities in the markets. This is why the prices of several items, including green chilies, have increased. However, prices are expected to decrease once the supply returns to normal. These insights were gathered from visiting Malibagh and Karwan Bazar in the capital and speaking with vendors.

Vendors reported that the wholesale price of green chilies has increased significantly compared to before. Due to the reduced supply, they have to buy chilies at higher prices from the wholesale market. Yesterday, green chilies were sold in various markets at 300 to 350 BDT per kilogram. Within a week, the price of green chilies has increased by more than 100 BDT per kilogram.

The vendors further mentioned that since Eid, traffic congestion has increased transportation costs, resulting in fewer green chilies arriving in Dhaka. Moreover, it is the end of the season, and the chilies in many fields have been harvested, with new plants yet to bear fruit. These factors have led to reduced supply in the wholesale market.

Traders said that during Eid, the supply of green chilies in the market decreases. Additionally, costs have increased due to rain and other factors, which have also contributed to the higher prices of chilies.

Among other vegetables, kakrol is being sold at 80 BDT per kilogram, round eggplant at 80 BDT per kilogram, long eggplant at 60 BDT per kilogram, papaya at 60 BDT per kilogram, sponge gourd at 50-60 BDT per piece, sweet pumpkin at 40 BDT per kilogram, stem amaranth at 60 BDT per kilogram, ridge gourd at 60 BDT per kilogram, snake gourd at 60 BDT per kilogram, bitter gourd at 80 BDT per kilogram, pointed gourd at 50-60 BDT per kilogram, carrots at 80 BDT per kilogram, taro at 100 BDT per kilogram, bottle gourd at 50-70 BDT per piece, lemon at 60 BDT per four pieces, and okra at 50 BDT per kilogram.

Onions and potatoes have also seen price increases. Domestic onions are predominantly sold in the market now. Before Eid, domestic onions were sold at 75-80 BDT per kilogram wholesale and 90 BDT retail. However, yesterday, the wholesale price of domestic onions was 80-85 BDT per kilogram.

Meanwhile, before Eid, potatoes were sold at 60 BDT per kilogram. Yesterday, the wholesale price of potatoes increased by 4 BDT per kilogram, now selling at 64 BDT. However, traders mentioned that prices of onions and potatoes will decrease once the supply increases.

The price of broiler chicken eggs has decreased by 10 BDT per dozen. Yesterday, a dozen eggs were sold at 150 BDT in Karwan Bazar. However, in various areas of the capital, a dozen eggs are being sold at 160 BDT.

Despite the decrease in egg prices, the price of broiler chicken has increased. Before Eid, broiler chicken was sold at 170-190 BDT per kilogram. Yesterday, in various markets, broiler chicken was sold at 190-210 BDT per kilogram. Meanwhile, Sonali chicken is being sold at 360 BDT per kilogram.

Within the week, the price of garlic has decreased, but the prices of cucumbers and tomatoes have increased. The prices of both domestic and imported garlic have decreased by 10-20 BDT per kilogram. The prices of cucumbers and tomatoes have increased by 20-40 BDT per kilogram. Fish prices have remained unchanged.
