At least six persons received bullet injuries after a clash between two groups over control of Islami Bank Bangladesh erupted in front of the bank’s head office in the capital's Motijheel on Sunday (August 11) morning.
The incident occurred during a protest organised by the Anti-Discrimination Bankers' Society, who were demonstrating against alleged corruption and criminal activities within the bank.
According to reports, the protest began peacefully, with demonstrators rallying against what they described as the "Thieves, looters, occupiers, and henchmen" controlling the bank.
However, violence broke out when a group of people, allegedly hired by S. Alam Group, attacked the protesters.
Witnesses said that the assailants opened fire on the demonstrators, injuring four people. The injured include Islami Bank's godown guard Shafiullah and officers Mamun, Abdur Rahman, and Baki Billah.
Five others were also reported injured, though their identities have yet to be confirmed.
The attack led to chaos as bank employees and officials attempted to defend themselves, forcing the attackers to flee.
The situation has heightened concerns over the ongoing unrest within the bank, which has seen increased tension since last Tuesday (August 6), when turmoil began following the reopening of the bank under the control of Jamaat-e-Islami.
The bank has been the subject of controversy and scrutiny, particularly after the change in government, which has led to growing unrest among its workforce.
Authorities are yet to comment on the incident. Security in the area has been tightened as the investigation continues.
