Citing lack of supply and production disruption due to flood issues, traders have increased the prices of nearly all varieties of rice at retail markets.

Visiting several kitchen markers including new market and Karwan Bazar on Friday (January 3) it noticed that rice prices have been rising in the market over the past two weeks.

Sellers complained that due to the increase in prices at the wholesale and mill levels, prices have also increased at the retail level.

Retailers are selling a per-kg of BR-28 at Tk65 to Tk68, compared to Tk 60 to Tk 65 one week ago.

Miniket is being sold at Tk 78 to Tk 80 taka per kilogram, which was sold at Tk 68 to Tk 75 two weeks ago. Nazirshail is being sold at Tk 80 to Tk 86 per kilogram, which was sold at Tk 70 to Tk 78 two weeks ago.

According to the data fromthe government agency Trading Corporation of Bangladesh (TCB), the price of rice per kilogram has increased by an average of 12 percent in the gap of a year.

However, the prices of all varieties of winter vegetables have dropped in city kitchen markets.

New potatoes were priced at Tk 40 to Tk 50 per kilogram, local onions at Tk 50, eggplants at Tk 30 to Tk 40, bitter gourd at Tk 60, carrot at Tk 40, bean at Tk 30, radish at Tk 15, green chili at Tk 50 to Tk 60, tomato at Tk 50 to Tk 60.
