Prices Of Cigarettes Go Up

In the middle of the current fiscal year 2024-25, the government has increased the Value Added Tax (VAT) and Supplementary Duty (SD) on more than a hundred products and services. Among these products is tobacco products, including cigarettes.

Recently, an ordinance related to this was signed by President Mohammad Shahabuddin. Following this, the VAT department of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) issued relevant guidelines.

The issued guidelines instruct the use of stamps and banderoles for different price levels of cigarettes and the collection of VAT and supplementary duties. This initiative aims to increase revenue collection during the last six months of the fiscal year.

The ordinance signed by the President has increased both the price and tax on four different levels of cigarettes.

For the lowest tier, the price of 10-stick cigarettes has been raised from 50 taka to 60 taka, with the applicable supplementary duty increased from 60% to 67%.

For the middle tier, the price has been increased from 70 taka to 80 taka, and the supplementary duty has been increased from 65.5% to 67%.

For the higher tier, the price has been increased from 120 taka to 140 taka, and the supplementary duty has been raised from 65.5% to 67%.

For the highest tier, the price has been increased from 160 taka to 185 taka, and the supplementary duty has also been increased from 65.5% to 67%.

Additionally, a 10% supplementary duty has been imposed on limestone and dolomite.
