'Fight Against Climate Change Becomes Political Issue'

Eliash Uddin Palash, the editor of the Shampratik Deshkal commented that the fight against climate change is now completely becomes a political issue.

He said, 'We know that those who run the state in our country are capitalists, they always want to fetch foreign capital over here. Though climate change is a natural phenomenon, but now it’s turned into the political issues. Big states want to impose their policies onto our shoulder. They harm the climate and we suffer the consequences. Again they send some funds in the name of climate, so that we can adapt (to climate change). But the most interesting thing is that they send much less funds than they promise to send. This climate change fight is now completely political. The final step is to solve the climate problem by changing this capitalist world system.

He made these remarks while addressing at the discussion meeting titled 'Climate change in the capitalist world system, suffering of the people: our responsibilities' initiated by the Jatiya Jubo Parishad (National Youth Council).

Friday (May 10) at 4:30 pm, the discussion meeting was organized at the Sankskriti Bikash Kendro (cultural development center) located in Paribag of the capital.

The meeting was also attended by researcher and economist Maha Mirza, coordinator of Democratic Student Alliance, Ankan Chakma. AKM Maksud, Executive Director of Gram Bangla Development Committee also spoke.

The speakers at the meeting emphasized on the negative aspects of global climate change and the collective efforts of all to deal with this crisis and accountability and transparency in the expenditure of climate funds.

Economist and researcher Maha Mirza said, 'TIB says that 75% of our country's climate fund cannot be tracked. The foot over bridge at Shahbagh was built with climate fund money. I don't know what the climate has to do with it.'

The discussion meeting was presided over by Aminul Islam Bakul, President of the Central Committee of the Jatiya Jubo Parishad (National Youth Council) and  moderated by the Central General Secretary of the National Youth Council, Abu Naser Anik.
