Corruption Most Problematic Factor To Do Business in Bangladesh: CPD

The Centre for Policy Dialogue (CPD) has said corruption, inefficient bureaucracy and limited access to finance are the most problematic factors to do business in Bangladesh, reports media.

The think-tank found these factors in its survey report titled "Bangladesh Business Environment 2021: Findings from Entrepreneurs’ Perception Survey" released on Wednesday.

“Businesses are also confronting troubles by similar types of factors. Corruption has been topping the list in 2021 as it did in earlier years,” said CPD Research Director Khondker Golam Moazzem in his key note presentation.

About 68 per cent respondents complained about the high level of corruption as the major problematic factor while 67 per cent respondents complained about inefficient bureaucracy as the second most problematic factor, said Moazzem.

Meanwhile, another 55 per cent mentioned limited access to financing as the third most problematic factor, he added.

The level of perception has increased during the current period. The gap in perception between three top most problematic factors has reduced – which indicates that the businesses have suffered most due to the combined effect of the three factors, said the economist.

Businessmen's perception about infrastructure has improved – it is ranked fourth important factor (45 per cent) which was earlier ranked top or second most problematic factor, according to the the think-tank.

Significant public and private investments in road, bridge, port, electricity, gas, rail, water supply have contributed improvement in infrastructure to some extent. Fast track projects for large scale infrastructure development could contribute improving the business environment further, it added.
