Admission into Schools Likely Through Lottery

Admission into government and non-government schools for the upcoming academic year is likely to take place through lottery owing to the ongoing corona pandemic in the country.

An amendment to a policy is underway for enrolling students at primary and secondary levels, via lottery if the Covid-19 infection rate continues to spike.

Directorate of Secondary and Higher Education officials also opined in favor of the proposed decision as health experts recommended gatherings at large schools to be avoided.

Bangladesh reported 32 deaths from the Novel coronavirus today (Tuesday), with the daily infection rate nearly 14%.

No guardians or students will be allowed to attend the lottery ceremony. The same will be conducted by an admission committee comprising managing committee members, teachers and several guardians.

The country has 19,421 high schools, 638 of which are government high schools. Dhaka has 42 government high schools and 321 non-government ones. There are also 25 reputed private institutions.

Students of Class I were admitted through the lottery last year. Students of Classes VI and IX were enrolled on the basis of their Primary School Certificate (PSC) and Junior School Certificate (JSC) exam results respectively. Written tests were held for other classes.

The government has decided not to hold PSC, JSC and HSC exams this year.
