The campus is throbbing
with demand for the resignation of the Vice-Chancellor of Shahjalal University
of Science and Technology (SUST). The students proclaimed their only demand at
the rally after the procession on the Mukta Mancha of Shahjalal University of
Science and Technology from 12:30 pm on Sunday (January 18). And that is the
resignation of VC Professor Farid Uddin Ahmed.
Earlier, the
administration announced the closure of Shahjalal University of Science and
Technology sine die. Rejecting the decision, the agitating students have staged
protests on campus, announcing that they will not leave the dormitory halls.
Students of three
residential student halls staged an immediate protest procession on the campus
around 9 pm after the campus was declared closed. The students called on the
university administration to reconsider its decision to close the campus and
the hall.
Last Friday
(January 14) night, the students had an argument with the provost of Begum
Sirajunnesa Chowdhury Hall. The students accused the provost of misconduct. The
students continued their agitation on Saturday. On that day, the students were
accused of being attacked by the BSL.
In this incident,
the campus of Shahjalal University of Science and Technology became agitated
again yesterday in protest of the three-point demand including the resignation
of the provost and the attack of Chhatra League. At around 2.30 pm, the
protesters surrounded the Vice-Chancellor on his way to his residence from his
office. Later, Vice Chancellor took shelter in the MA Wazed Mia IICT building.
At that time the students blocked the vice chancellor and locked him. Later,
around 4 pm, more than 100 policemen took position on the campus.
Police went into
action to rescue the confined VC around 5:15 pm.
Shahjalal
University of Science and Technology was declared closed indefinitely after an
emergency syndicate meeting on Sunday night. Students have been instructed to
leave the hall by 12 noon on Monday (January 17). As a result, the students
started protesting again from midnight.
