From January next year, a two-semester system is being introduced in the private universities of the country
instead of three semesters.
The University Grants Commission
(UGC) has already informed all the universities in the country about this
decision.
The UGC said the initiative was
taken to enhance the quality of education in private universities and enable students
to learn better by hand.
Omar Farooq, director of UGC's
private university department, said on Tuesday (May 17) that the two-semester
system would be introduced in private universities from January 2023. This will
increase the quality of education. Students will gain skills in practical
aspects.
He added that students are
admitted to public universities only once a year. Throughout the year the
student is given time to master the subjects well. In developed countries,
there are two semesters per year in 'Spring' and 'Fall'. And in our country,
students are admitted three times a year in spring, fall and winter. One
semester every four months. Before one semester lesson is well mastered,
another comes away. In this way, the students, who go to the job market, fall
behind in efficiency. Again, in every semester, the student has to pay a huge
amount of money to the university for re-admission.
The official said the UGC would
take a tough stance from now on so that the universities could not teach as
they like and conduct their teaching programs following a standard guideline.
