UGC Recommends Internships Mandatory For Undergraduate Degrees

From now on internships should be mandatory for undergraduate degrees so that students can acquire the required employability and competitive skills according to the needs of various industries, Bangladesh University Grants Commission Chairman (additional charge) Professor Muhammad Alamgir has recommended this for the undergraduate students.

He made this recommendation while speaking as the chief guest at a training workshop at the UGC auditorium on Monday.

“In the age of artificial intelligence, there is no alternative for students to acquire employability skills. In the next 5 to 10 years, 50% of traditional jobs will be replaced by artificial intelligence. Only high-efficiency work will require public involvement. Therefore, to meet the needs of the times, the current higher education curriculum should undergo major changes,” said the UGC chairman.

The UGC chairman said that many students are not getting employment opportunities after completing graduation as their institutions fail to make them skilled according to market demand.

UGC Secretary Ferdous Zaman chaired the training workshop, while Bangladesh Public Administration Training Centre MDS (R&C) Md Monirul Islam attended it as a resource person.

A total of 55 officials of the commission participated in the workshop conducted by UGC Deputy Secretary Md Asaduzzaman.
