Singer Sandhya Mukharjee Hospitalized with Breathing Troubles

Bangla music legend Sandhya Mukharjee, who refused to accept the Padma Shri award one of the highest civilian honour in India, has been taken to hospital with breathing issues and lung infections. 

The 90-year-old, whose songs stirred up patriotic fervour among Bangladeshis during the 1971 war was taken a Kolkata on Thursday, reports The India Express.

Citing a family member, it said she developed breathing troubles Wednesday.

“There are signs of infection in both her lungs. She has been put on oxygen support. She was admitted to the SSKM Hospital’s Woodburn department for treatment where the doctors will conduct further checks on her,” the report quoted the family member.

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee visited SSKM Hospital where the singer Sandhya Mukherjee is admitted.

She also suffered a mild cardiac arrest, according to Mamata Banerjee. "We will take all measures to ensure the safety of the singer,” she said after visiting the singer in hospital.

The singer, who is suffering from Covid-19, was later transferred to Apollo Hospital.

On Tuesday, Shandya refused an offer from the Indian government to confer her with the Padma Shri award, the fourth highest civilian honour in the country. 

Her daughter Soumi Sengupta told the media that she informed the senior official who called from Delhi that she is not willing to be named as a Padma Shri recipient and felt “insulted” at her being offered the award at her age.

She has sung for numerous Bangla films and Hindi films and has worked with leading music directors, including SD Burman, Madan Mohan, Naushad and others.

Sandhya Mukherjee received the Banga Bibhushan, West Bengal’s highest civilian award, in 2011, and a National Film Award for Best Female Playback Singer in 1970.

She left her mark on Bangladesh's struggle for independence with songs that helped motivate the freedom fighters.
