40pc Corona Beds Still Vacant: Health Minister

Mentioning that exactly 14,000 beds have been assigned for Covid patients in the nation's emergency clinics, Health and Family Welfare Minister Zahid Maleque on Tuesday said 40 percent of those are as yet empty.

"Dislike that patients are not getting treatment in any emergency clinic of Bangladesh. As of today, we've 60 percent of beds occupied while 40 percent are as yet empty. We've somewhere in the range of 14,000 beds for corona patients," he said.

The Minister was reacting to claims brought by opposition MPs while talking about their cut-motions regarding Tk 22,883.86-crore demand in grant for the Health Services Division.

The Health Minister said high-stream oxygen lines are basic for Covid-19 patients. Thus, the administration has taken initiative orchestrating 1,000 high-stream oxygen or central oxygen lines and 10,000 new oxygen cylinders.

About the charges of anomalies in lodgings and food expenses of specialists and doctors of Dhaka Medical College Hospital, the Minister said the claims were not right as around 3,700 individuals remained there in 50 inns for a month, and Tk 500 was given as food cost for three suppers per day – breakfast, lunch and supper. "The lease for each room was Tk 1,100 every day."

Taking note of that the expenses were not all that high, he said including, "The food cost that was supposed to be (in charge) isn't right."

Zahid Maleque said now there is no charge about the standard of the Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). The administration has just sent 30 lakh PPEs to various medical clinics, he said.
