Korea Provides USD 4mn to Support 2021 JRP

The Republic of Korea has recently decided to send $4 million this year to international agencies having a presence in Bangladesh in order to aid in the resolution of the long-running Rohingya refugee crisis.

Under the recently announced 2021 Joint Response Plan (JRP) for the Rohingya Humanitarian Crisis, the contribution will be used to help UN agencies and other international organizations in their humanitarian efforts to assist Rohingya refugees and their host communities in Bangladesh.

The UNHCR, UNICEF, WFP, IOM, and IFRC will receive the 4 million USD donation this year. IOM had already received $1 million in funding to help with the emergency response to the devastating fire in Cox's Bazar refugee camp in March.

Supporting the host nation, combating gender-based abuse, assisting children and girls, and responding to emergencies and disaster relief are some of Korea's top priorities in its aid to Rohingya refugees and the host community.

In addition to financial donations, the Republic of Korea has launched a variety of humanitarian initiatives in collaboration with other international organizations and non-governmental organizations (NGOs) to assist Rohingya refugees and host communities through KOICA.

KOICA is introducing a 3 million USD project in Cox's Bazar, in collaboration with UNFPA, to support the menstrual health of women and girls. In Cox's Bazar, KOICA is collaborating with NGOs such as Adi, World Vision, and Concern Worldwide on a variety of initiatives to support refugees and the host community.

Since the outbreak of the Rohingya refugee crisis in 2017, the Korean government has worked closely with the international community to address the crisis as a trusted partner of Bangladesh. Between 2017 and 2021, Korea gave the international community about $20 million for Rohingya refugee-related activities in Bangladesh. This humanitarian assistance will help protect the displaced persons and host communities.

The Republic of Korea will continue to work closely with the international community and the Bangladeshi government to resolve the humanitarian crisis and find long-term solutions centered on the Rohingya refugees' voluntary, secure, dignified, and sustainable return to Myanmar.
