The country’s Bangladeshi-inhabited Tower Hamlets Council announced the naming of five new buildings. This information was given in the report of BBC Bangla on Monday night.

The five prominent Bengalis are poet Sufia Kamal, social activist Tasadduk Ahmed MBE, former general secretary of the Awami League Syed Ashraful Islam and the late London-based journalist Shahabuddin Ahmed Belal. A building is also being named after Altab Ali, a symbol of the anti-apartheid movement in East London.

John Biggs, executive mayor of Tower Hamlets Council, announced the names of the five prominent Bengalis at a news conference on Monday. The construction of these buildings is almost finished. The construction of four of these buildings will be completed this year, John Biggs said. He said it would take some time to start the construction of the building named after Shahabuddin Belal.

Mayor John Biggs told the BBC that Bangladesh’s war of independence was closely linked to the glorious history of British Bangladeshis in East London. By honoring these five personalities, that history and the overall contribution of Bangladeshi immigrants to East London has been recognized.

“We are doing this so that people in this multi-ethnic society do not forget their roots,” he said. It will be the voice of the community. It is a testament to the progress that has been made under the leadership of the British-Bangladeshi community. “

Poet Sufia Kamal

The contribution of the five people who were given the honor by the Tower Hamlets Authority was highlighted at the press conference. Apart from playing the role of Dishari in the cultural arena of Bangladesh, poet Sufia Kamal also played an important role in the women’s progress movement. He also had an outstanding role in the war of independence of Bangladesh. He died in 1999. She is the first woman in Bangladesh to be buried with state honors.

Tasadduk Ahmed

Tasadduk Ahmed was a father figure in the Bengali community in Britain. He played a significant role in the development of this community and many socio-cultural institutions were born through his hands. He published two newspapers, Desh Dak and Intern News.

In recognition of her special role in the social and political movement, she was awarded the honorary title of MBE in 1989. He also received the Freedom of the Bar honor from Tower Hamlets in 2000.

Syed Ashraful Islam

The name of Syed Ashraful Islam is not unknown in the political arena of Bangladesh. But he also plays a key role in serving the Bengali community in Britain, according to Tower Hamlets authorities. At one time he worked in the education department at Tower Hamlets.

Shahabuddin Ahmed Belal

Besides journalism, Shahabuddin Ahmed Belal played a role in the anti-apartheid movement in Britain. He also once served as ward councilor in the Stepney Green area.

Altab Ali

On the other hand, Altab Ali, an ordinary migrant worker, became a symbol of the anti-apartheid and anti-fascist movement in East London through his death. He was killed in a racist attack in 1986.

About 7,000 people carried his coffin to central London after his death. They demonstrated in front of Hyde Park, Trafalgar Square and Downing Street, the prime minister’s residence.

White, Indian, Pakistani and Caribbean immigrants from London also joined the movement. London’s Bahasa Shaheed Minar is in a park named after him in the White Chapel area.
