Israel is launching a series of attacks in Lebanon, with various groups retaliating. This has left foreign workers feeling insecure, including over 100,000 Bangladeshis, of whom nearly 40% are female workers. However, those wishing to return home will be evacuated by Bangladesh.
On Thursday (October 3), the Bangladeshi embassy in Beirut confirmed this information.
Md. Anwar Hossain, the First Secretary (Labour) at the Bangladeshi embassy, stated, "We have informed the Ministry of Foreign Affairs about the overall situation here. A policy decision regarding evacuation has already been made. The Ministry has asked us to compile a list of those who want to return home."
He assured that there would be no delays in this evacuation process due to its urgency.
The embassy has also kept expatriates away from dangerous areas, noting that the situation is worsening in southern Lebanon and Shia-dominated areas of Beirut. Due to the ongoing circumstances, the Bangladeshi embassy announced the suspension of consular and welfare services on September 23.
The embassy reported that approximately 20,000 to 25,000 Bangladeshis have relocated to Beirut from dangerous areas, especially around Rafik Hariri Mosque and Hamra Sanaya Park. At least five Bangladeshis have been injured in the attacks and counterattacks in Lebanon, including three in southern Lebanon and two in Beirut.
