The government of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) has released 75 more Bangladeshi expatriates who were detained for participating in protests and demonstrations. These individuals were arrested for showing solidarity with the student uprising in July-August and for protesting against killings and oppression.
The information was confirmed by Mohammad Sarwar Alam, the Deputy Secretary of the Ministry of Expatriate Welfare and Overseas Employment, on Friday, November 29.
Earlier, the UAE government had released 113 people, making a total of 188 Bangladeshi expatriates freed.
These individuals had been sentenced by the Abu Dhabi Federal Court for violating UAE laws, with sentences ranging from 10 years to life imprisonment.
After Dr. Muhammad Yunus assumed the role of interim head of the government, he took immediate steps to have these expatriates freed, personally requesting the UAE president over the phone.
The 75 individuals released on Friday are expected to return to Bangladesh within a week.
