In five distinct cases, the High
Court on Tuesday extended the bail of former Prime Minister and BNP Chairperson
Khaleda Zia by one year.
Three suits were filed in Dhaka, one
in Narail, and one in Cumilla.
In the three defamation cases filed
in Dhaka and one in Narail, a High Court bench of Justice Muhammad Abdul Hafiz
and Justice Mohammad Ali ordered the extension of bail.
Meanwhile, Khaleda Zia's bail in the
Cumilla case was extended by a High Court bench led by Justice A K M
Asaduzzaman and Justice Kazi Md Ejarul Haque Akondo.
Khaleda Zia was represented in court
today by Barrister Kaiser Kamal Mohammad Abdullah Al Mamun and Advocate
Roknuzzaman Shuja.
Khaleda Zia, who was convicted in two
corruption charges, was temporarily released on an executive decree due to her
age and humanitarian grounds during the Covid-19 outbreak.
In February 2018, the BNP head was
sentenced to prison in the Zia Orphanage Trust corruption case. After
dismissing her appeal on October 30, that year, the High Court increased her
sentence to ten years.
In addition, Khaleda Zia was
sentenced to seven years in prison in October 2018 after a special court found
her guilty in the Zia Charitable Trust corruption case. She is still dealing
with at least 36 cases.
