The third death anniversary of former Awami League General Secretary and Public Administration Minister Syed Ashraful Islam will be observed today.

Syed Ashraf died on this day in 2019 at the age of 68 in a hospital in Bangkok, the capital of Thailand.

He left for the United Kingdom on November 3, 1975, after the brutal assassination of four national leaders, including his father, Syed Nazrul Islam, in prison. In exile he played an important role in organizing the Awami League in the United Kingdom.

Ashraful Islam returned to the country in 1996 and was elected Member of Parliament for the first time as an Awami League nominee from Kishoreganj Sadar constituency. During this time he served as the Minister of State for Civil Aviation and Tourism.

He was re-elected in the 8th National Assembly election held on 1 October 2001 and served as a member of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He was also elected Member of Parliament in the 2008 elections and served as Minister in the Ministry of Local Government, Rural Development and Cooperatives. On 16 July 2015, he took charge as the Minister of Public Administration.

Syed Ashraf was born on 1 January 1952 in Mymensingh. His father Syed Nazrul Islam was the caretaker president of the Mujibnagar government in 1971. Besides, he was one of the organizers of the war of independence of Bangladesh.

Syed Ashraf was active in student politics in his student life. After independence he was the general secretary of Chhatra League of Mymensingh district. He also served as the co-publicity secretary of the BCL Central Committee.

Ashraful Islam took part in the war of independence of Bangladesh in 1971. He was a member of the Mukti Bahini.
