The 24-hour countrywide blockade called by the main opposition Bangladesh Nationalist Party and its allies is now underway.

Reports received from the divisional headquarters and different districts said that the opposition activists brought out processions in the cities and districts in support of the blockade.

The reports said that long-route buses did not leave the cities for Dhaka.

BNP leaders alleged that the law enforcement agencies continued raids in the houses of the party leaders and activists and arrested scores of them.

The opposition political parties have been demanding the cancellation of the schedule for the 12th general election and the resignation of the Awami League government by handing over power to a poll-time, party-neutral caretaker government.

In Dhaka, number of vehicles on roads is higher than that of previous blockade days.

Pro-blockade activists brought out processions at places in the city.

A bus of Turag Paribahan was set on fire by miscreants at Dholaipar in Shyampur area of Dhaka at about 5:30 am.

A total of 428 patrol teams of Rapid Action Battalion have been deployed across the country to maintain law and order during the ongoing 24-hour rail, road and waterways blockade called by BNP.

Addressing a virtual press briefing on Tuesday, BNP senior joint secretary general Ruhul Kabir Rizvi said that the crackdown against BNP leaders and activists continued, with 17,345 people having been arrested since October 28.

The opposition observed a nationwide dawn-to-dusk hartal on October 29 and seven spells of blockade, also protesting against the deadly attacks on the BNP’s grand rally by police and AL activists at Naya Paltan on October 28.

Bangladesh Jaamat-e- Islami, Ganatantra Mancha, Liberal Democratic Party, Gono Odhikar Parishad, AB Party and other parties in the ongoing anti-government simultaneous movement are observing the same agitation programmes.
