Sarjis Alam, 44 Others Drafted Into Jatiya Nagorik Committee || Photo : Collected
The Jatiya Nagorik Committee has named 45 more people, including former coordinator of the Anti-discrimination Student Movement Sarjis Alam, as the platform's central members.
Within two and a half months of its inauguration with an aim to “reform the state, abolish the autocratic system and achieve a successful political settlement of new Bangladesh”, the number of central members of the platform has increased to 107.
A press release, signed by the committee’s Convener Nasir Uddin Patwary and Member Secretary Akhter Hossain, said on Monday that the development is a part of the organisation’s ongoing process of expanding the central committee.
Sarjis Alam, Ali Ahsan Junaid, Debashish Chakraborty, Mohammad Ejaz, Sheikh Tasnim Afroz Emi, Kailash Chandra Rabi Das, Rafe Salman Rifat, Ushchepru Marma, Umme Habiba Benazir, Mir Arshadul Haque, Ali Nasir Khan, and Mamunur Rashid have been made central members of the committee, the release read.
Among other members of the committee are Abu Sayeed Leon, Saqib Mahdi, Zobairul Hasan Arif, Syeda Nilima Dola, Sharif Osman Hadi, Ali Ammar Muaz, Arefin Mohammad, Bhimpalli David Raju, agriculturist Golam Mortuza Selim, Sonamoni Karmakar, Minhajul Abedin, Syed Ujjal, Burhanuddin Noman, Rakib Hossain. Arifur Rahman Tuhin, Rafid Bhuiyan, Joynal Abedin Shishir, and Johnny Akand.
On Sept 8, the Jatiya Nagorik Committee emerged on the political scene within a month of the political changeover following the fall of the government in the mass uprising.
A 55-member committee was declared by Nasir, a member of the Movement’s liaison committee, at an event at the Central Shaheed Minar in Dhaka.
After unveiling the committee, Nasir said: “We want to reconstruct the state and make policies prioritising the public interest.”
