Road communication of Chattogram with 12 districts has been nearly cut off as a portion of transport owners enforced an indefinite strike in the division since today morning.

The strike was enforced at 6:00am today after a 72-hour ultimatum asking the authorities concerned to take steps to stop harassment and extortion by law enforcers.

The strike is causing immense sufferings to commuters of 16 routes as public vehicles were scarce in the city including different upazilas as well.

The affected districts include Cox’s Bazar, three hill districts—Khagrachari, Rangamati and Bandarban--Brahmanbaria, Feni, Noakhali and Cumilla.

The workers under the banner of Chattogram “Gono o Ponno Paribahan Malik-Oikya Parishad” announced the strike last night.

Meanwhile, Belayet Hossain, member secretary of another faction “Chattogram Bibhagiyo Gono o Ponno Paribahan Malik-Shramik Oikya Parishad”, said they are against the strike and will stand up against anyone who is seen picketing and enforcing the strike.

“Gono o Ponno Paribahan Malik-Oikya Parishad” September 4 threatened to go on an indefinite strike unless authorities concerned take steps to stop harassment and extortion by law enforcers within three days.

They also placed a nine-point demand, including not to use consumer rights act against transport workers, issuing license and updating those in a flexible condition.
