Without taking approval from telecommunication regulatory agency, BTRC, Grameenphone increased the price of Internet data package. On Tuesday (Nov 12), the mobile operator informed of the price rise through an SMS though it did not mention the earlier price.

Talking about the issue, Post and Telecommunication Minister Mustafa Jabbar sounded pissed off: “Grameenphone cannot do this; there is a ban on the operator preventing it from launching new packages. We did not give then a NOC (No Objection Certificate) either.”

“We will go to action against GP after Nov 14, he added. Linked to note, BTRC has suspended the NOC for ROBI and Grameenphone. As a result, Grameenphone cannot launch a new package or rejig an old one.

BTRC Chairman Md Zahurul Huq said: “We will analyse why this was done; if they broke the law then we will take legal action against them.”

The rejig SMS said that from Nov 12, the 1.5 GB Internet package for thirty days will be Tk 247. It’s known that earlier, the rate was Tk 229 with 28 days validity. The GP public relations department said that it will give a statement on Wednesday (Nov 13).
