Fire ravages Noakhali market

A number of shops were gutted after a fire flaring up at the Islamia Market at Chowmuhani of Begumganj Upazila on Sunday evening. 

Toufik-E-Elahi, deputy assistant director of Noakhali Fire Service and Civil Defense, said the fire generated at a shop around 6:30 pm and spread rapidly. 

On information, 10 firefighting units from Noakhali Sadar and neighboring Feni district went to the spot and brought the fire under control after two hours of wild effort, he said.

The reason behind the fire and the area of damage could not be known immediately. 

Five people, including a firefighter, were injured while wiping out the blaze, Toufik said.

Witnesses said more than 50 shops were gutted in the fire. Traders claimed they suffered a loss of Tk several crores. 

Meanwhile, Deputy Commissioner of the district Tonmoy Das paid a visit to the spot immediately and formed a three-member probe body with Begumganj UNO Mahbubur Rahman as its chief to look into the incident.  

The committee was asked to submit its report within the next seven working days.
