The BNP has rejected claims of negotiating with the ruling party on the release of their chief Khaleda Zia from jail on parole.

Speaking to the media today, Secretary General Mirza Fakhrul Islam said, “The family of BNP chairperson is dealing with the issue of filing an application for her release from jail. I had no discussion with [Awami League General Secretary] Obaidul Quader over the matter.”

He made the comment after paying tribute to BNP founder Ziaur Rahman at Sher-e -Bangla Nagar in the capital.

On Friday, Obaidul Quader claimed that Mirza Fakhrul reached out to him over-phone to seek the prime minister's intervention for Khaleda's release on parole.

“I had a discussion with Mirza Fakhrul Islam Alamgir on the release of Begum Khaleda Zia on parole over-telephone. He (Fakhrul) requested me over-phone to discuss the issue with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina,” the senior Awami League leader and a Cabinet member told a media call.
