The International Islamic University Chattogram (IIUC) and Sylhet Metropolitan University were fined Tk 1 million each by the Supreme Court for admitting over 50 students to the department of law in contravention of the University Grants Commission (UGC) regulation.

The court asked for the money to be submitted to the council of bars.

The orders came from an appellate bench headed by Justice Hasan Foez Siddique on Sunday (Feb 23).

Earlier, the UGC published a guideline limiting the number of admitted students to fifty each semester. The students then sought to take part in the bar council review, but when the council refused to take in fifty, the students sent a petition to the High Court.

Subsequently, High Court ordered the bar council to allow the students to fill out forms and register for the examination. After this, the board of bars referred to the court of appeals.
