Dr Yunus Pays Tk 7,500 Fine, Gets Relieved from Case

Grameen Communications Chairman and Nobel Laureate economist Dr Muhammad Yunus got relieved by paying Tk 7,500 as fine from a criminal case filed for breaching labour law rules.

Tariqul Islam, labour inspector (general) of the Directorate of Inspection for Factories and Establishments, lodged the case with the Third Labour Court’s (Dhaka) Judge Rohibul Islam on January 5 last.

In addition to Dr Yunus, Grameen Communications Managing Director Nazneen Sultana, Director Abdul Hye Khan and DGM Gauri Shankar were made defendants in the trial.

The High Court summoned the respondents in the case on January 13. Admitting guilt, lawyers sought acquittal of the allegation on February 20 on behalf of Dr Yunus.   

Talking to journalists, Sirajul Islam, one of Dr. Yunus ' lawyers said, "We told the court that there is a rule to get acquittal under Labor law. Therefore, we admit guilt and we vow to respect it in the future."
