Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and other top government leaders are willing to cut their salaries by 30% this year, a government minister said on Monday, as the nation is battling the coronavirus outbreak and its impact on the economy.

Modi has imposed a three-week lockdown to avoid the transmission of the epidemic, which also left millions without work with many of the neediest areas of society unable to find food and shelter.

The federal cabinet has approved a declaration that Modi, along with President Ram Nath Kovind, state governors and members of parliament, should take the fall in salaries as part of their social duty, Minister Prakash Javadekar told reporters.
